Can I send food or olive oil abroad?

Short answer

Yes, if the food is non-perishable and packaged, such as olive oil, honey or pasta. Olive oil is sent with our wooden crate service. Perishable food, meat and dairy products are not accepted, and some countries have strict rules.

You can send food abroad as long as it doesn't need refrigeration and is sealed in its packaging. Shipping takes several days, and parcels aren't transported at a controlled temperature.

Which foods are accepted?

  • Packaged food that doesn't spoil, such as olive oil, honey, pasta, pulses, spices and shop-bought sweets.
  • In closed, original packaging, with a label.

Which foods aren't accepted?

  • Perishable food, such as fresh fruit, vegetables and bread.
  • Meat, cured meats and fish.
  • Dairy products, such as cheese and yoghurt, and eggs.
  • Anything that needs to be chilled or frozen.

How do I send olive oil?

You can send olive oil to any destination with our wooden crate service. The crate protects the container from leaks, and if it's placed inside a box, there's no packaging surcharge. See shipping olive oil.

Which countries have strict rules?

  • Australia: all food must be declared and is checked by the biosecurity authorities. Many foods are prohibited or need a permit.
  • New Zealand: all food must be declared. Commercially packaged olive oil is accepted, up to a set quantity per product.
  • United Kingdom: meat and dairy products from EU countries are banned for personal imports.
  • Canada: personal-use quantity limits apply. Commercial shipments need a licence.
  • USA: some food shipments, especially from businesses, need an FDA Prior Notice. If you need one, we'll guide you through it.

Rules change

Each country decides what's allowed, and the rules can change without notice. If the food isn't allowed, customs may seize or destroy it, with no compensation. Ask us through the contact form before you book.

On the proforma

List each food item separately, with its quantity and value, e.g. "olive oil 5 L", not "food".
