Sending a suitcase by courier: cost, packing and customs

With a suitcase, volumetric weight matters a lot because it takes up space. With most services it is length × width × height in centimetres divided by 5,000: a large 75 × 50 × 30 cm suitcase has a volumetric weight of 22.5 kg. That's why it is often cheaper to send the same things in a box sized to the contents instead of a suitcase: a box doesn't carry the suitcase's own weight, wheels and handles, and takes up less space. Before deciding, put both options into the comparison.
If you want to send the suitcase itself without an extra packaging charge, you need to put it inside a box. Choose a sturdy box slightly larger than the suitcase, fill the gaps so it doesn't move, seal every seam with tape and stick the shipping label on the box. Keep cash, jewellery, your passport and important documents with you.
Within the EU there are no customs duties or import VAT. For countries outside the EU, such as the United Kingdom, the USA or Switzerland, the suitcase goes through a customs check even if it only contains personal belongings, and usually needs a contents list with descriptions and values. Import duties, taxes or fees may apply under the destination country's rules. We help you prepare the documents.
