What is volumetric weight and how is it calculated?

Short answer

Volumetric weight reflects how much space a parcel takes up: length × width × height in centimetres, divided by the courier's divisor, usually 5000. For each box, you are charged the higher of the actual weight and the volumetric weight.

Couriers charge by weight, but also by the space a parcel takes up in the truck or plane. That's why a large, light box can cost as much as a much heavier one.

How is volumetric weight calculated?

  1. Measure the outside of the box in centimetres, at its widest points.
  2. Multiply length × width × height.
  3. Divide by the courier's divisor. It's usually 5000, but it can vary by courier and service.

Example with two boxes

Box 1 · 50 × 40 × 30 cm, 5 kg
Volumetric 60,000 ÷ 5000 → 12 kg · 12 kg charged
Box 2 · 30 × 20 × 15 cm, 4.2 kg
Volumetric 9,000 ÷ 5000 → 1.8 kg · 4.5 kg charged
Total chargeable weight
16.5 kg

Which weight am I charged for?

  • Each box is assessed separately, and the higher of its actual and volumetric weight is charged.
  • The chargeable weight is rounded up to the next half kilo.
  • When you book with City Sender, you enter the weight and dimensions of each box, and the price is calculated automatically from the chargeable weight.

What if the courier measures it differently?

The courier may weigh and measure each box again. If the dimensions or weight are higher than declared, the shipment is re-invoiced and the difference may be charged to you. That's why you should weigh and measure the box after sealing it.

Common mistake

Entering the dimensions of the item instead of the box. What counts is the outer packaging, including any bulges or parts that stick out.

How can I lower the chargeable weight?

  • Use a box that fits the contents, because empty space is paid for.
  • Compress soft items, such as clothes, before sealing the box.
  • If you're planning to send your things in a suitcase, the same items in a box often cost less. See how shipping a suitcase works.

Before you book

Seal the box, weigh it and measure it, then make your booking. That way you avoid a price difference after re-measurement.
