How do I measure and weigh my parcel correctly?

Short answer

Measure the box after sealing it, from the outside and at its widest points, and round each dimension up to the next whole centimetre. Weigh each box separately and enter the weight exactly as the scale shows it, without rounding down.

Your shipping price is based on the weight and dimensions you enter when booking. If you measure correctly from the start, the price you see is the price you pay, and you avoid price differences later.

How do I measure the dimensions?

  1. Seal the box first, as tape and contents can make it bulge.
  2. Measure the outside of the box with a tape measure, not the inside.
  3. The length is the longest side. The width and height are the other two.
  4. Measure each side at its widest point, including bulges, handles or anything that sticks out.
  5. Round each dimension up to the next whole centimetre.

Example

Measured
40.3 × 30.6 × 20.1 cm
You enter
41 × 31 × 21 cm

How do I weigh the parcel?

  • Weigh the box sealed, with all the packaging and protective material inside.
  • A parcel scale or a hanging scale gives the most accurate result.
  • Enter the weight exactly as the scale shows it, without rounding down.

No parcel scale?

Weigh yourself on a bathroom scale holding the box, then weigh yourself without it and subtract the second reading from the first. This is less accurate for light parcels, so if you're not sure, enter a little more.

What if I'm sending several boxes?

  • Measure and weigh each box separately.
  • When booking, enter each box with its own weight and dimensions, not one total.
  • We recommend keeping each box under 25 kg, as this is usually more economical.

Weight and size limits

Each courier has limits on the weight and dimensions of each piece. You'll find them under "Details" for each service when you choose it during booking.

Why do dimensions matter, not just weight?

Couriers charge the higher of the actual weight and the volumetric weight, which reflects how much space the box takes up. That's why a large but light box can cost more than you expect. See what volumetric weight is.

Common mistake

Entering the dimensions of the item instead of the box. The courier measures the outer packaging, and if it finds higher figures, the shipment is re-invoiced.
